Description
Black Kite soaring overhead. The Black Kite is a raptor in the family of Kites. It’s distinguished from other Kite species by being the only one with a forked tail. Adult Black Kites are dark brown, head and neck a bit paler, eyes yellow. They are most often seen soaring on the thermals as they scan the area for food. They catch small live prey on the ground and insects on the wing (they love grasshoppers), but they are scavengers as well. They are also known to hang around at the edges of bushfires, looking for prey that is trying to escape the fire.
Their range is through most of Australia, more common in northern areas. They are commonly seen around outback towns and on outback plains. They are the only raptor that tends to hang out in flocks.
Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
