This leafless terrestrial orchid produces a stem with 5 up to 60 pretty flowers. The flowers are pale to bright pink and covered in heavy red-purple blotches. The green stem can get up to 1m tall and the flowers are 2-2.5cm wide. When not flowering, the plant spends its life underground. Only once a year can you be lucky enough to see the flowering stems grow up out of the earth! Underground, they live in a partnership with a fungus to which they attach their roots. This way the orchid gets some nutrients. The green stem does photosynthesise, despite the fact that there are no leaves, and the orchid shares its produced carbohydrates with their fungus host. This partnership is called a myco-heterotrophic relationship.
