Description
Bottle nose dolphin riding on the bow wave, taken in South East Queensland, Australia.
This large well known Dolphin species is popular for its behaviours of bow-riding and ‘porpoising’ (leaping clear of the water). They can jump up to 6m out of the water! They are found offshore all around Australia, usually in small groups. They are grey and a bit paler on their underside. They have a large dorsal fin. The mouth line of their small, bottle-shaped snout curves slightly upwards, which makes them look like they are smiling a bit. The Bottlenose Dolphins communicate through clicking sounds and echolocation. They are very social and usually hunt together for fish and squid.
