Collared Kingfisher Portrait. A close-up encounter with this beautiful bird is uncommon as they are quite shy of people. As I was concealed by the twisting branches of the mangroves it may not have noticed me or at least it didn't feel threatened.
This bird has a strong preference for living in mangroves and is therefore also known as the Mangrove Kingfisher. The name Collared Kingfisher refers to the colour pattern on its feathers, showing a white collar. The underparts are also white, and the back and top of the head are blue and green. There is a black band that goes through the eye. The large pointy bill gets used to catch small fish, crabs and shrimps for a favourite meal, but they will also prey on other small animals. Their range covers coastal areas around the northern half of Australia. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
