Description
Come Along!
Australian Pelican and Little Black Cormorants are about to enter the water of the lake to go fishing. The Cormorants are very excited! It looks like the large Pelican says 'Come Along little birds!' as if it is a kindy teacher, taking out a bunch of toddlers on a little trip! :)
Notice also that this Pelican is in breeding colours, the bill turning pink instead of yellow and having cobalt blue markings on it! Maybe it's dreaming about having lots of little pelican chicks to take out fishing!
Australian Pelicans are very large birds, measuring up to 1.9m., with a wing span of 2.5 m.! They are mainly white, with black tips on their wing- and tail feather. Their enormous bill is 40-50cm long and has a pouch which can hold 13 litres of water! They use it to locate and catch fish in murky water.
Little Black Cormorants are a small black Cormorant and can be found in fresh-water environments or estuaries in large parts of Australia and New Zealand as well as parts of Asia and some Pacific Islands. They congregate in large flocks and feed on fish and crustaceans.
Taken in South East Queensland, Australia.
