Wonderful capture of these flying foxes! I love how they curl their wings up and tuck em up over their faces, like we do with our bed sheets on a cold night! :) It's amazing how they can hang by their feet and sleep without falling down!

Thank you Maili!

I agree with Morris, this is a fabulous photo! Whilst I wouldn't describe flying foxes as cute, they are a magnificent sight when the whole colony flies overhead at dusk! Congratulations Maryse.

Artist's Description

This cozy bunch of Little Red Flying Fox was found roosting in a tree at day time. At night time they fly out to find food. Their diet consists mainly of Eucalyptus (Gum Tree) and Melaleuca (Paperbark Tree) nectar, due to which they have to be a bit nomadic. ‘Little’ refers to them being a smaller type of Flying Fox (also commonly called Fruit Bats), but they are still large bats with a body length of about 20cm and a wingspan of around 1 metre. Their body fur is reddish brown, their head is grey. The legs are red-brown and hairless, the wings are also red-brown. Little Red Flying Fox can be found in coastal and sub-coastal areas in Northern and Eastern Australia. They tend to roost in large roosting camps of other Flying Fox species. When roosting, they stick very close together in clumps, while other, larger species hang about an arms length apart from each other.
Common threats to the bats are habitat loss, powerlines and barbed-wire fences.
Unfortunately they are not alwa...
