Description
Large flock of Crested Terns and a small flock of Pied Cormorants in the foreground on a sandbank, the ideal vantage point for a fishing expedition. Taken from Rainbow Beach, Queensland, Australia, which is part of the Great Sandy National Park.
Crested Terns are large terns, common along the coastline of Australia. You can see them in ones, twos, small flocks or large flocks. Around breeding time they gather in very large colonies on offshore islands. They feed mainly on fish. Crested Terns can be recognized by their black forehead and crest, which in non-breeding time retracts so their forehead becomes white, and they have a yellow bill.
Pied Cormorants are large black and white cormorants with a yellow face and a long grey hooked bill. They also feed mainly on fish and can be seen in flocks throughout most parts of Australia. They are found near water around the coast and also in inland wetlands.
This part of the Great Sandy National Park is called the Cooloola section and stretches from Noosa to Rainbow Beach, the other section is Fraser Island.
