Mat Rush or Lomandra longifolia is a native Australian herb, mostly found throughout eastern Australia. The clustered flower head in this image shows the creamy-brown coloured flowers, protected by sharp spikes. The brown seed capsules remain visible throughout the year. The long strappy leaves are about 1cm wide, grow up to 1m long and are a glossy green, firm and flat. The leaf bases are broad with yellow/white or brownish margins and the tips of the leaves are prominently toothed.
Lomandra longifolia is a very hardy plant, tolerates frost and drought, and can grow in most soil types. It is often seen on banks of creeks where it can prevent erosion due to its extensive root system.
Indigenous Australians have a variety of uses for this plant. The leaves are perfect for basket weaving, the base of fresh leaves can be chewed and tastes a bit like fresh baby peas and the seeds can be ground into flower to bake damper.
Taken in south east Queensland, Australia.
Thank you...
I love exploring nature. Originally from the Netherlands, I made Australia my home in 2009. There is so much to discover! I pay my respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today and in the...
