Description
Honeybee taking a dive in a Native Pigface Flower. Of the 30 species of Pigface plants, 6 are native to Australia. This particular one, Carpobrotus glaucescens, is widespread throughout the east coast areas of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. The hardy succulent prefers a habitat of coastal sand dunes or rocky ground. It flowers during spring and summer with bright pink flowers that are 6cm. The leaves are 7cm long and have a triangular cross-section. A honeybee is taking a plunge into the flower to get to the nectar. The fruit has been reported edible and is said to taste like salty apples. Aboriginal peoples also ate the salty leaves roasted. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
