Description
Female Satin Bowerbird perched on a branch in the rainforest. While the male Satin Bowerbird is a glossy blue-black bird, the female could be called dull in her olive, brown and cream plumage if it wasn’t for her gorgeous purple-blue eye!!!
The males go to great length to please her eye as they build their bowers: the focal point of their territory where courting and mating rituals take place. They create an avenue of two parallel rows of sticks and decorate the area with anything blue they can find: feathers, flowers and berries but they also ‘steal’ artificial objects from the human world such as plastic straws, pegs, bottle tops and pieces of glass. Lesser known is the fact that they also put yellow and brown objects such as cicada shells and more flowers in their bowers.
Satin Bowerbirds feed mostly on fruits, but will also take leaves and insects. They are common in rainforests, and nearby eucalypt forests in eastern and south-eastern Australia. Taken in south east Queensland, Australia.
