Description
Lesser Sand Plover. Moody image of the Lesser Sand Plover on a windy beach. The bird is in non-breeding plumage. It has a grey-brown head and back-side, with a white eyebrow and forehead and a white breast and underparts. It is impossible to distinguish between the sexes when they are in non-breeding plumage, which is how they are usually observed in Australia.
They breed in the northern hemisphere (all the way up to eastern Russia) and migrates annually to feeding grounds on the southern hemisphere. It's a fairly common migrant on mudflats and sandy beaches in eastern and northern Australia. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
