The Pheasant Coucal is a very interesting bird and looks a bit like a crossing between a pheasant and a cuckoo. Like pheasants it has a long tail and is mainly a ground-dwelling bird. They can fly short distances but appear a bit clumsy. Unlike cuckoos, coucals build their own nest and raise their own young. Their feathers come in black and reddish-brown, patterned with speckles, streaks and bars in cream, brown and black shades. The eye is red. They can be found in long grass woodlands in northern and eastern Australia. Pheasant Coucals feed on large insects, frogs, lizards, eggs and young birds. This one is proudly carrying a cicada in it’s beak! It’s perched on a Casuarina Tree, also known as She-oak. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
