Description
Royal Spoonbill Illuminates Mangrove Forest.
The Royal Spoonbill is a majestic wading bird of considerable size (up to 80cm)! The bird is white and has a large spatulated bill. It's white plumage illuminates the mangrove forest on this overcast day.
While wading, the bird swishes its bill from side to side in search of food. It feeds on fish, shrimps, crustaceans and aquatic insects. The bill is black, as are the legs, feet and facial skin. It has a yellow spot over its eye. In breeding season the Royal Spoonbills develop a crest of long plumes which can be erected during mating displays. It wades in shallow water such as these mangroves here. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
