Description
Sacred Kingfisher Entering Nest
Sacred Kingfisher just about to enter its nest, a magnificent splash of blue in the landscape!. These birds prefer to build their nest in an arboreal termite nest. They make a hole in it through which they enter.
The Sacred Kingfisher stands out in the forest with its beautiful colours: the bright turquoise blue and greenish upperparts, tail and wings. The underparts are buff-white and they have a cream-coloured collar. A broad black stripe extends from the bill to the neck.
These kingfishers seldom eat fish, they live in coastal woodlands throughout Australia where they prey on insects and other small animals. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
