Artist's Description

Wild Saltwater Crocodile (or 'Saltie' as Australians call them) warming up on the river bank of Daintree River, Queensland, Australia.
Saltwater Crocodiles are the largest living reptiles! Males can grow up to 6 metres long, females are much smaller, up to 3 metres long. They are very dangerous animals. They ambush their prey from under the surface of murky water, where they can stay and hold their breath for hours! When prey approaches the water's edge or even goes into the water they are capable of launching a lightning fast attack. They then hold on with their strong bite (the strongest bite of any living animal!) and then drown their prey or swallow it whole. In northern and eastern Australia they can be found in estuaries, coastal swamps and rivers from Rockhampton to Broome. They are also able to spend significant amounts of time at sea. They are a protected species in Australia, listed as vulnerable in Queensland.

I pay my respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today and in the...
