Description
Varied Sitella - White-headed form - Daphoenositta chrysoptera - race: leucocephala
The Varied Sitella is a common little bird, endemic to the whole of Australia. Throughout the country they are observed in various forms, with varying colour schemes and patterns so much that they have often been treated as seperate species. This is the white-headed form, ranging from south-east Queensland to north-east New South Wales. This form has a white head, is streaked on back, breast and under the tail; has an orange bar in its wing and the iris, eye ring, legs and feet are orange to yellow. Sitellas feed on insects which they find in the cracks of tree bark. Their behaviour is similar to Treecreepers but easily distinguished by the fact that they move head-down as opposed to Treecreepers. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.

Common or not, I have had no prior awareness of this beautiful little bird. I don't recall ever seeing one despite being a long-term resident of south-east Queensland and a birdwatcher! I personally relate to his white head and head down movements as that accurately describes me. Well done Maryse, it is a wonderful photo!
