Artist's Description
The Bush Stone-curlew is a large, flying ground dwelling bird. They are slim birds, grey-brown on top and lighter on their underparts, streaked with black and rufous. They have large yellow, staring eyes and a distinct white brow. During the day these birds can stand still as a statue on their long legs for hours on end, resting, usually in the shade of a tree. At night they do their feeding and other activities. They feed on what they can find on the ground, such as seeds, small lizards and insects. More often heard then seen, they are known for their eerie wailing call which sounds a bit ghost-like during the night. They are found in various habitats throughout mainland Australia. They are however endangered in New South Wales and Victoria. Taken in tropical north Queensland, Australia.
First Place in the CURLEWS AND KNOTS CONTEST November 2021.
