Close-up of the 'cone' or seed pod of a Banksia Oblongfolia. Banksia can grow as shrubs or trees and due to the characteristic flower spikes and the 'cones' that are left after the flowers have withered they are a popular sight. These interesting looking seed pods are often used by wood turners to create souvenirs for tourists such as coasters and ornaments. This coastal Banksia species grows along the East coast of Australia and flowers in winter. The flowers, when fully opened, produce a lot of nectar which attracts a plethora of Honey Eaters, insects and small mammals such as gliders, possums and bats. Taken in South East Queensland, Australia.
