Tryptich of Tree Bark. Three images of the barks of Australian Eucalyptus or Gum Trees. On the left and right images variations of Grey Gum with it's smooth bark. In the left image the tree is shedding its bark (decorticating). This is a common sight, especially in Smooth-barked Gum Trees and it indicates that they are growing. It also helps the tree rid itself of parasites, mosses, lychen and fungi that grow on the bark. Often this process will reveal beautiful colours and patterns on the new bark as displayed in the right image. In the centre an image of the bark from Moreton Bay Ash, which is a Half-bark. Half-barks have a smooth upper trunk while the lower half has rough bark. The lower bark of Moreton Bay Ash is dark with small tile-like pieces.
