Koala hiding in the thickets. Koalas are difficult to spot. They love to hide high up in the Gum Trees, covered by leaves or camouflaged by the silvery grey trunk and branches. Koalas are fully dependent on these trees for shelter as well as for food. They are quite picky eaters and only eat certain types of Eucalyptus - or Gum Trees' leaves. These are not very high in nutrients so their food doesn’t give them a lot of energy. This is why they sleep most of the day and need a safe place to do so. High up in the trees they are safe from dog attacks which is one of their biggest threats! Other threats are deforestation, disease, increased urbanisation and cars and of course many lost their lives and habitat during the bush fires of 2019-2020!
