Who doesn't love the Koala! Unfortunately this beautiful animal is under threat and numbers are heavily monitored here in South East Queensland, Australia. The ear tag shows that this one is part of a research project. It's taking a break from munching on the Eucalyptus leaves that it has found in these young trees, that have been planted recently to create more koala habitat. This is necessary since they are losing their habitat rapidly to urbanization.
Koalas are marsupials and with their soft grey fur they have a high level of cuteness. They can be found in open woodlands in coastal areas of eastern and southern Australia.
Koalas are very picky eaters, they only eat certain types of Eucalyptus - or Gum Trees' leaves. They are an important icon for Australia. They are however a threatened species. The biggest threats are deforestation, disease, increased urbanization, cars and dogs, and of course many lost their lives and habitat during the bush fires of 2019-2020!
