Masked Lapwing. The Masked Lapwing is a large plover that can be spotted in eastern and northern Australia.There are two forms, this is the eastern form which can be recognized by the black shoulder patch. The northern form lacks these black patches and has a white shoulder. Masked Lapwings are most easily recognized by their yelllow face mask and wattles which give them an interesting appearance. They prefer open spaces and wetlands and can be residential or nomadic in their range. They are very protective of their nests and young - which they have to be as they create their nest on the ground in wide open spaces. They are known to 'swoop'(dive) while making loud noises to distract possible intruders. Their alternative name is Spur-winged Plover because they have yellow spurs at the elbow of their wing which they can, but seldom do, use in their attacks. Contrary to popular belief they do not carry venom in these spurs. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.

Beautiful capture Maryse. Love these little guys...I don't know how they are not endangered...they really do just drop their eggs in the most public and busy places and then spend the next while or so being hysterically protective. Seems to work...I don't like to tangle with them LOL L/f
