Sea Purslane is a spreading succulent creeper that grows as mats on beaches, dunes and in salt marshes.Taking a closer look, one can see the lovely abstract patterns it creates on the sand together with its shadows. The stem of the plant is reddish-green in colour. The leaves are long and small, thick and glossy, and green in colour. It produces small, pink flowers throughout the year. The plant is reported to be edible and to have a slightly salty taste. It’s high in vitamin C and fatty acids. It also has medicinal properties.
Sea Purslane is native to Australia. It is found around the Australian coast from central New South Wales round Queensland and Northern Territory to near Shark Bay in Western Australia. It also grows in coastal areas throughout much of the world.
It’s a good pioneer species and therefore often used in dune restoration projects.
