Artist's Description
A huge army of Soldier Crabs marches around on the beach during low tide. Soldier Crabs are white crabs with blue backs. On the joints of their legs they have purple patches. They walk in a forward motion (not sideways like most other crabs do) and hold their claws vertical. They can be spotted along the coastline of south-east Australia in mangroves, estuaries and on beaches.
These remarkable creatures spend most of their time buried in the sand. When the tide goes out they start to emerge and the crowd can grow into the thousands. They trek towards the water’s edge to feed, mainly on detritus. Inedible material is disposed of as pellets of sand. They don’t shy away from trampling over each other. When they’re done they march back up the beach, dig new burrows and submerge again until the next low tide. Taken in South East Queensland, Australia
