Artist's Description
Red-bellied Black Snakes were once common in their range (they are native to eastern coastal Australia) but numbers have declined dramatically. It is thought that this is due to the attempted predation of the poisonous introduced Cane Toad. Habitat fragmentation and decline in frogs also play a role. The venom may cause muscle damage, nerve damage and stop your blood from clotting. No deaths have been confirmed from a bite of this species.
