Description
Red-bellied Black Snakes were once common in their range (they are native to eastern coastal Australia) but numbers have declined dramatically. It is thought that this is due to the attempted predation of the poisonous introduced Cane Toad. Habitat fragmentation and decline in frogs also play a role. Red-bellied Black Snakes are diurnal and feed mainly on frogs, so you may find them near (shallow) water. They also take small reptiles and mammals.
They are a beautiful glossy black snake with a distinctive red to cream coloured belly. Their irises are very dark in colour. They can get up to 2m long and are dangerously venomous. The venom may cause muscle damage, nerve damage and stop your blood from clotting. No deaths have been confirmed from a bite of this species. When you think you may have been bitten you need to seek urgent medical attention. However, they are quite a shy species and will avoid encounters with people if they can and only bite when provoked.
Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.
