Description
Whimbrel Feeds on Crab
The Whimbrel is a medium sized Curlew, recognized by its downward curved bill. The Eastern Curlew also has a downward curved bill but that one is much longer. Whimbrels breed in the arctic circle and migrate to the southern hemisphere to feed. They are common in northern Australia. The bird in the image has just caught a crab while roaming the mudflats in search of food. Whimbrels are streaked brown and have white underparts.
Taken in tropical north Queensland, Australia.
