Description
The pretty flowers of the Blue Heliotrope grow in captivating clusters. Blue Heliotrope is a low growing herbaceous plant. The blue or purplish flowers grow in 2 rows along one side of the flowering stem. The flowers are tubular, 5-8 mm long and have a yellow throat. Blue Heliotrope blooms mostly in summer but flowers can be seen all year round.
It’s not native to Australia but it’s widely naturalized in eastern and south eastern Australia. You can find it in open grasslands and open woodlands, as well as on roadsides, in parks, pastures and gardens. The plant can get invasive so needs to be kept under control. It goes by many different common names such as Creeping Heliotrope, Purpletop and Summer Heliotrope.
Taken in south east Queensland, Australia.
